Five healthy foods for brain development in preschool children

Posted on 05-01-2014

brain_waves_tampa_flNutrition is extremely important for healthy brain development, so it is critical to ensure that a healthy diet is consumed during the first five years of life when the brain is growing and developing at a rapid pace. Here are five foods that are good for brain development:

1.  Fish

Oily fish like salmon and tuna are rich in essential fatty acids that help with healthy blood clotting and building cells membranes in the brain. A great way to ensure your child gets these nutrients is to serve grilled fish with vegetables for dinner or  tuna sandwiches for lunch.

2.  Leafy greens
Spinach and kale are two super-vegetables that are packed with vitamins and nutrients such as Vitamin K, Vitamin A, calcium, and potassium. They are also rich in fiber. Although these do not directly promote brain development, they provide nutrients essential for a healthy, growing body primed for learning. You can put a handful of raw spinach or kale into a berry smoothie for a sweet taste while providing great nutrients.

3.  Eggs

Eggs are a high-nutrient protein as well as a source of Omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins. Vitamin B2 (riboflavin) helps break food down into energy, giving your child's brain a consistent fuel source for concentrating and learning, while Vitamin B12 helps to produce the red blood cells that transport oxygen to every part of your child's brain and body. Hard-boiled eggs make for a great snack in your child's lunchbox or you can poach them for breakfast and serve with whole-wheat toast.

4.  Oatmeal

Oatmeal is high in dietary fiber, manganese, selenium, and zinc. These nutrients boost the immune system, help the body heal from wounds, promote healthy bone growth, and have antioxidant properties. Oatmeal is a great breakfast for growing children which provides them energy and important nutrients.

5.  Apples

Apples are rich in healthy dietary fiber, antioxidants, and flavonoids. They are high in Vitamin C and Vitamin B, which help to protect children against germs and keep their nervous systems strong. Apples are easy to eat, pack into a lunchbox, and taste sweet without being full of added sugars and artificial ingredients.
